The Basics of Medicare

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 and older, or who qualify through certain disability situations. We can break it down a bit further to give you an idea of what it looks like in more detail.

Did You Know: Medicare Has Multiple Parts?

Original Medicare consisted of Part A and Part B; Medicare Parts C and D were added later on.

Here’s the difference:

Medicare Part A

Part A is hospital insurance, and for most people, there is no premium. It helps cover:

  • Inpatient care in hospitals
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Home healthcare

(Note: It does not cover long-term care)

Medicare Part B

Part B is medical insurance, and for most people, there is a monthly premium of $174.70 It helps cover:

  • Services from doctors and healthcare providers
  • Home healthcare
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Preventative services such as vaccinations

(Note: It does cover long-term care)

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage (MA). This is where you would receive your health insurance through a private health insurance company.

You can learn more about this type of Medicare here.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage through a private health insurance company. In many cases, Part C and D are combined to form what is called a MAPD plan, Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan.
