Medicare and ACA
Many people have coverage through the Healthcare Marketplace. Commonly, these are self-employed people—people who no longer have employer coverage, or just people who needed health insurance. In many cases, the premium is subsidized, which makes it affordable.
Once you are eligible for Medicare, you will no longer qualify for the subsidy. This would make staying on the ACA plan much more expensive than Medicare. So you should sign up for Parts A and B, and then proceed choosing a Supplement or Advantage Plan.
If you are not receiving a subsidy, you should still enroll in Medicare, since ACA insurance does not count as Medicare replacement like employer coverage can. If you do not sign up when first eligible, and then decide to sign up at a later time, you may incur late fees and a possible lapse in coverage.
